Plus Size Clothing – Finding the perfect jacket

The perfect jacket can see you from a job interview to lunch with the girls to an evening out. But with so many shapes and styles to choose from, many women feel lost when it comes to choosing a flattering jacket.

For full-figured ladies, a jacket should emphasize vertical length – so a jacket reaching down to mid-thigh works well. Keep the shape clean with invisible pockets and no extra decorative details. Wide lapels balance other areas of the body, like large hips, and look stunning on curvaceous ladies.

Small-breasted ladies should look for high necklines, wide lapels and interesting collar details – ruffles, peter-pan and mandarin collars. Ruffled or puffed sleeves with interesting details also balance your chest area. Avoid plunging necklines, which draw the eye down. Cropped and double-breasted jackets look awesome on small breasted women, as do horizontal strips or detailing over the chest.

Pear-shaped figures need straight-cut jackets, which emphasize height rather than width. Coats that flare out at the bottom skim over your curves, creating a flattering shape. Bold details and design features across the front of the jacket – buttons, buckles, trims and embroidery – draw the viewer’s attention to the centre of your chest.

If you’re short, you need to look for shorter jackets, as longer styles swamp you. Choose long lapels to lengthen your torso, and bold vertical details, like seams, trims and buttons. Shorter ladies should also avoid double-breasted jackets.

If you’re nervous about your tummy, try a straight-cut or semi-fitted jacket that falls below your bottom. This gives a flattering silhouette while disguising lumps and bumps. Look for dark colours and long lapels.

With a little attention to your body shape, any women can find a flattering jacket. Don’t be tempted to choose trendy styles that don’t look good –find a classic jacket that fits perfectly and looks stunning year after year.
